Castillo de Sajazarra cellars

Sajazarra leaves an impression marked by its name, one that evokes firmness, robustness and transports the heart of medieval Castilla.

The village of Rioja Alta conserves one of the few castles in the community from the XIII century, where, ashlars, fortified towers, turrets and arrow slits bring echoes of power and combats.

Since the late 60s, Castillo de Sajazarra has been linked with the Líbano family and gives name to the cellar. On acquiring the property the proprietors started a careful process of restoration. It was then that the medieval caves of the fortress told their greatest secret: a winery and a press for the elaboration of wine.

In that moment, the new owners initiated the passionate adventure of recuperating an activity buried in history. They acquired terrains on the slopes of the Obarene Mountains where they cultivated vineyards, mainly Tempranillo, and in 1973 they elaborated the first artisenal harvest that now ages in the first 50 casks in the cellar.

In this way, the wine of Castillo de Sajazarra came back to life. After trying its excellent quality, the proprietors took the indicative to commercialise it. The number of casks augmented, the installations adjusted and the cellar was transferred to buildings situated within the castle gardens, where a new plant was built respecting the surroundings, by the side of the River Mardancho, in a place of singular beauty.
